All our pre-schooler snacks are certified organic and free from artificial colours, flavours, and preservatives. When a recipe needs a sweet touch, we use natural fruit and vegetable powder or juice, always keeping the fruit juice amount minimal and only if absolutely necessary. It’s important to allow your child to regulate, which may mean that your child eats more or less than his/her peers and this is OK. It’s also important to focus on what your child eats over 3 days rather than focusing on every meal and every day as it’s normal for a child’s intake to have considerable variability across days. Your role as a parent is to decide what food and when to offer it, but children have a natural ability to sense when they are hungry and when they are full. Letting your child from 3+ years make food choices can contribute to their sense of autonomy and self-efficacy, while also introducing them to the consequences of their decisions.
The rule of thumb is if you are providing a carbohydrate, like bread, pasta, or crackers, ensure that it is paired with a protein source. This will help with sustained energy through the day, rather than having energy peaks and crashes which happens when eating refined carbohydrates on their own.
